An Evening in Hong Kong

Updated: Apr 23, 2020

Discover the very best Hong Kong has to offer and deliver a night to remember for both you, your friends and the 'gram!

Hong Kong, where east meets west, and where food options are as plentiful as the high rise bars and those #views. So to save you time searching for hours on where to go, play and eat here is my guide to getting the best out of Hong Kong in an evening.

So to start the perfect evening it must begin with something to eat and there is nothing more satisfying than a Wagyu-Sando. A Wagyu-Sando you ask? Perfection on a plate for meat lovers, it is high grade Japanese Wagyu steak coated in Panko bread crumbs that's served medium rare with mustard sauce wedged between toasted slices of Japanese milk bread. Originally from Japan this sando has taken off in HK and is truly what food dreams are made of. Fukuro, a Japanese Izakaya in Central, is the best place in town to try this sando as it is delicious and won't break the bank balance for 200 HK dollars. To get your hands on their sando be sure to arrive for dinner at 6pm as the sando doesn't appear on their menu and with limited numbers it will sell out fast! The best way to enjoy eating here is tapas style with friends, order the sando and a range of other delicious and innovative dishes such as the crispy caramel corn, wakame salad and snow crab. Then wash it down with a glass of umeshu or one of their signature cocktails and finish the meal with the sweet and crunchy Monaka ice cream sandwich.

If Japanese food doesn't float your boat then try the well known, quirky and creative Chinese restaurant Yum Cha. This is an experience in itself as the dim sum dishes here are fun, tasty and delivered with personality. Expect your food to come out with cute faces, inventively presented, and so cute you'll feel guilty eating them! Other dishes are on the menu, however you cannot visit here without trying a selection of steamed buns such as the red bean, custard, or bbq pork. Each is soft, delicious and playfully designed. The crispy pineapple puffs, fried wontons and colourful shrimp dumplings are also fantastic.

After you have spent a few good hours of gorging on the delectable eats above it is time to make your way over to the Star Ferry port in Central's Victoria Harbour to cross over to Kowloon. For less than the cost of riding the Metro this short journey will give you perfect views of the City's bay and skylines lit up in all their glory. Bring a jacket on colder evenings as it can get chilly.

Once you have arrived in Kowloon make your way to your next destination, the Eye Bar, located in the iSquare building next to Tsim Sha Tsui Station. Take a leisurely stroll via the Avenue of Stars immediately to your right once disembarking from the Star Ferry and after arriving at the Eye Bar, thirty floors above Hong Kong's busy streets, you are guaranteed to have spectacular scenery and views. This skyline is best observed from the roof top terrace where you can enjoy a drink whilst sitting on the edge of the building itself! If heights aren't your thing don't worry you can relax and sit back in the cool and comfortable atmosphere of the Chinese maritime themed bar. Here you can sample a huge range of drinks, however, I would recommend trying one of their signature cocktails such as the Mango Mama where Grey Goose meets mango or Grape Expectations for gin enthusiasts. The drinks here are good but pricey so to get the best out of your visit aim to make happy hour between 6pm and 9pm.

After an hour or so it is time to make your way back to the Star Ferry and head to Central for an experience like no other at the Stockton bar. With its intimate setting and unique British "private members club" vibe and decor it will transport you back in time to an era resembling the early 1900's. The location is hidden (but all the best gems are!) so make sure you have the address prepared in advance. The cocktails are idiosyncratic, full of character and simply divine. Each one tells its own tale which can be seen on the charming menu and in the presentation. Must try cocktails include Cousin Neolith with its roasted fig syrup and avocado liqueur or the Tungus with Ghee infusion of Tanqueray Gin and Absinthe.

It's getting late now so it is up to you what to do next. Whether you choose to head home or hit the club you can continue on knowing you have sampled some of the best food, views and cocktails in town!
